Could Green Tea Help Prevent Colon Cancer?

Weight loss, better skin, improved brain function and lowered risk of cancer: sound like your cup of tea? Well, if you’re drinking green tea, it certainly should! An abundance of research has shown the many healing properties of green tea, and now, researchers are looking into whether green tea could prevent the occurrence of colon cancer.

Researchers at Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea believe that compounds in green tea can prevent the development of rogue cells that lead to colon polyps. Polyps are benign growths of tissue found within the colon, and patients with a personal history of colon polyps are at increased risk of developing colon cancer. The study will consist of 180 participants who have previously had colon polyps removed. Some participants will be given a daily green tea extract pill – the equivalent of nine cups of green tea – while other participants will receive no treatment throughout the duration of the study.

Prior studies have produced encouraging results regarding the effects of green tea on colon polyps. One study conducted by Gifu University in Japan found that patients who consumed the equivalent of ten cups of green tea per day had a 15 percent rate of polyp recurrence, while patients who received no treatment had a 31 percent rate of recurrence (Source: Daily Mail). Another cohort study in China found that regular green tea consumption reduced the risk of colon cancer by 37 percent among women between the ages of 40 and 70 years (Source: European Food Information Council).

Further research is needed to understand the relationship between green tea consumption and colon cancer risk, but you can begin reaping the full rewards of green tea today by making it a regular part of your diet. Green tea can improve blood pressure, lower cholesterol, promote digestion, and according to some sources, may reduce the occurrence of heartburn to help prevent esophageal cancer. So what are you waiting for? Grab your favorite mug, brew a fresh pot of invigorating green tea, and drink to good health!
