5 Tips to Turning Those New Year’s Resolutions into a Reality

New Year’s Day may just be another day on the calendar, but for many, it is an opportunity to make a fresh start in life. Maybe you’re hoping this is the year you’ll shed some unwanted pounds or pay off debt. Or, perhaps your goals are a little more personal, like improving relationships with family and friends. Making a resolution is easy, but bringing it into fruition requires some work. Here are some steps you can take to help you turn your goals into a reality.

Choose One Resolution

It’s easy to get carried away when thinking about all the possibilities the new year can hold. But if you find yourself on Jan. 1 with a laundry list of New Year’s resolutions, you’ll quickly become overwhelmed and discouraged. It’s best to choose one resolution that is most important to you and make it a priority. This will allow you to focus your energy on doing one thing really well, and you’ll be more likely to succeed.

Make a Schedule

Regardless of what your resolution may be, a written schedule can serve as your map to success. Decide what actions you will take to accomplish your goals, and write them in your calendar or planner. Be sure to also write down short-term goals you would like to accomplish by specific dates. This gives you a tangible way to gauge your success and determine whether you’re staying on course.

Build a Support System

Having people to encourage you and share in your success can be a great resource when taking on new challenges. Share your resolution with friends and family members so they know how to be supportive. You’ll feel more motivated knowing that your loved ones are invested in helping you reach your goals.

Reward Yourself

Having something to look forward to is a great way to stay driven throughout the year. Decide how you will reward yourself when certain goals are accomplished. Maybe you’ll treat yourself to a new outfit after slimming down a size, or take yourself out to dinner to celebrate paying off a credit card. Just be sure that your rewards aren’t counterproductive to achieving your overall goal.
